Maintain sobriety during the holidays!
The holiday season is fast approaching, and for many of us, holidays symbolize peace, joy, and happy memories. For some, it is a time to reconnect with your family, friends, and loved ones and take a break from some of the worries incurred over the past year. For others, holidays can be a stressful time and a period in which staying sober is a real challenge.
Here are some tips on how you can enjoy this season and maintain sobriety:
Plan ahead - Creating a plan on how to handle yourself during social gatherings can boost your confidence and help you avoid possible triggers. Limit your time around stressful situations and difficult people. Inform your family and friends that you are in recovery ahead of time. A backup escape plan is also essential when you're feeling triggered.
Make healthy choices - Eating healthy foods, regular exercise, and visiting your therapist are essential parts of your holiday season, just as they are throughout the year. Be mindful of the event that you are attending, even if it is a family gathering. Refuse the invitation if you know that it could trigger a relapse. Spend the holiday with a supportive friend or find a group that is also committed to sobriety
Serve in the Community - Doing volunteer work is also a great way to spend the holidays while in recovery. Volunteering helps to foster a feeling of being connected to others throughout the season.
Enjoy your homemade drinks at the event - Bringing your own healthy drink or sodas to an event is one way to avoid accidentally drinking alcoholic beverages served at a party. It also comes in handy when someone offers you drinks that you can decline. You can also offer to make fun, colorful, and healthy mocktails that the entire family can enjoy.
Prioritize yourself - Celebrate holidays by looking after your physical and mental health. Identify how celebrating feels good to you. Self-care comes in many forms and can be as simple as reading your favorite books or cooking your favorite dish. Plan another activity that gets you out with nature or even just a walk at the nearest park. Meet with your therapist and talk to a friend or sponsor to maintain your recovery.
Do whatever you do that offers yourself kindness and love.
Whether you are in an active recovery program or seeking ways to maintain long-term sobriety, it is important to know the best way for you to stay sober over the holidays: plan ahead, know your triggers, and ask for help when needed.
